Thank you for your generous support of Friends of the Rappahannock! The last 30 years have been marked by the growth of FOR in the reach of our organization, membership and donors. With your ongoing support we can continue to build our programs up and downstream creating a full watershed approach to conservation.

Over the past year, our staff have been working hard across the watershed, from the Mountains to the Bay, to protect the precious resource that brings us all together – the Rappahannock River.

I remember last winter when our staff pulled together a huge and successful federal grant proposal to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). It was a tremendously tedious task that took countless hours, but has bared fruit for a three year grant to strengthen our Education programs in the tidal portion of our River. In 2016, in addition to the regular annual programs we offer, FOR will be providing yearlong Meaningful Watershed Educational Experiences for all of the sixth grade students within four tidal counties.

I remember last spring when the trees were in bloom and the driveway was a loading zone for native plants and trees for various tree plantings and rain garden projects throughout the watershed. Community members and students created and restored riparian buffer zones and stormwater management systems to filter rainwater before it enters the River. In 2016, FOR will work with our partners to plant five acres of riparian buffer zone, restore streams, and create and install 60 oyster sentinels within an oyster sanctuary.

I remember last summer when our van and boat trailer headed out over and over again to take families, University research groups, and children out for river adventures, many for the very first time! Individuals learned about the River and how to be safe while enjoying its rapids and flatwater. In 2016, FOR will continue to provide opportunities for the community to safely enjoy the River and experience its breathtaking beauty.

I remember this fall when leaves blanketed our woods and our staff worked countless hours to oppose the development of a critical habitat along our River’s edge, Fones Cliffs, all while planning and executing our largest fundraising event of the year – Riverfest! Our 25th Riverfest was our most successful with over 1,000 supporters busting blue crabs and enjoying the scenery. In 2016, FOR will work closely with Richmond County Board of Supervisors to include best management practices into phase two of the Fones Cliffs development plan and begin planning for the next Riverfest!

Now, as 2015 comes to a close, we ask you to continue your support of FOR. With a special end of year gift, you can ensure that the Rappahannock has the protection it needs and deserves. Together, we are the voice and active force for a healthy and scenic Rappahannock River.

Giving Circles

Inspired by our 25th anniversary as a successful grassroots conservation group, Friends of the Rappahannock’s Giving Circles was born from our “25 for the 25th” campaign. The 25 for 25 challenge sought to find 25 people to take a leadership role in helping to expand FOR’s reach and impact.

Giving circles encourage our members and partners to take a leadership role in supporting river protection programs. Leaders demonstrate the ability to envision tomorrow, to motivate others and commit to live purposefully. Leadership giving is not different. You embrace the challenge of keeping the Rappahannock healthy and scenic, act as a catalyst for others and demonstrate your commitment to the river.

When you join a giving circle you commit to a gift of one of the following amounts each year, for three years:

  • $500
  • $1,000
  • $5,000

Through your leadership gift to FOR, you have the opportunity to make an investment in the river and a meaningful difference in our community.

Community Affinity Accounts at Virginia Partners Bank

Part of Virginia Partners Bank’s mission is to put time and treasure back into the community. As Fredericksburg’s only locally owned and managed bank, they have committed to helping keep the river healthy and scenic. Part of that commitment is the creation of Friends of the Rappahannock affinity accounts. Any community member who opens a checking, checking with interest, or savings account can opt into an affinity account. The bank will make a donation to FOR based on the average balance in all the affinity accounts. No money will come from your account. It’s great for the community and great for the river! If you are interested, please contact Judy Nave at 540-899-0005 or jnave@vapartnersbank.com.
